Marnhull is a large picturesque village positioned above the Stour River, in the County of Dorset, and is home to nearly two thousand people. This thriving village just ten miles or so from Sherborne is the largest in the county, and dates back to the Iron Age. Agriculture and quarrying for the mellow coloured stone have played an important role in its growth, together with farming as it's positioned in the stunning Blackmore Vale renowned for its rich meadows, and pasture where Dairy herds graze. Visitors will uncover a small array of shops for that everyday purchase, and a choice of interesting places to stay. There's a diverse mix of architecture from Nash Court the home of Henry VIII's last wife Catherine Parr, the ancient church standing at the heart of the village parts of which date back to the 10th Century, attractive houses, and cottages, and a pretty 16th Century thatched Inn. Perhaps it was the panoramic views across stunning countryside which inspired the talented writings of Thomas Hardy who encapsulated the village which was known as Marlott in the intriguing tale of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, the church, and the thatched Inn was also mentioned although the name was altered to The Pure Drop Inn, which also featured in the televised drama that was filmed here.
