Southbourne is a suburb of Bournemouth in Dorset. It was once known as Stourfield and lies between Boscombe and Christchurch at the eastern end of the borough. A major tourist feature in Southbourne is the Cliff Railway, running between the coastal road on the clifftop and the beach. The railway provides easy access to the Blue Flag beach at Southbourne and from there you can also reach the beaches at Boscombe and Bournemouth. At the eastern end of the beach is Hengistbury Head, a headland jutting out into the English Channel. Historically this was a site of major importance in the trading between Britain and Gaul. Settlements in the area date back even further, to the Stone Age when the headland would have overlooked the large river valley which would eventually become the English Channel. There are Bronze Age barrows on the hill as well as Iron Age fortifications in evidence. Today the head is a key tourist spot with country walks which can lead all over the head, some of which form part of the Bournemouth Coast Path. It is also home to a nature reserve. Visitors can stay at Mory House, a bed and breakfast situated just 200 yards from the cliff top.
