Weymouth is a large seaside town set in a wide bay of mostly sand. The beach gets popular in the summer months and the town has long been a holiday destination - made popular by the visits of King George III (mad king george!). The magnificent Georgian Esplanade looks out across the Bay and its safe, clean sand - very popular with the young! It was originally a fishing village which grew in the late 1600's but it still retains a very busy harbour (with connections to France and the Channel Islands) and is stopping point for numerous leisure and pleasure craft. In more recent times the area had a large part to play in the D-Day invasion of June 1944. The town has many amenities and facilities with many old and authentic pubs sitting happily alongside modern vibrant eateries. There is a good tourist Information centre and an excellent Market on Thursdays and no visit is complete without a walk along chesil beach - one of the many natural wonders of the area. Population 52,000
