Events in Hatherleigh | 10 Places to Stay
Founded by Monks and with over a thousand years of history behind it, the central Devon market town of Hatherleigh lies at the meeting point of the rivers Lew and Torridge. The busy little town houses its own pottery and many works of local artists can be found decorating Hatherleigh, not least among them the Rams Head sculptures in the Square. On Tuesdays Hatherleigh comes alive as bargain hunters gather at the auction and haggle at the market stalls for a deal or two. A traditional pub lunch is considered a vital element of market day in Hatherleigh. Situated as it is on the Tarka Trail, Hatherleigh offers access to many scenic walks and drives along these well trodden routes. An annual carnival is held in Hatherleigh each November and involves some interesting local customs, including the burning of barrels of tar and a jazz band leading a procession of locals in fancy dress carrying flaming torches. Close by Hatherleigh is Belvedere Castle. From here stunning panoramic views across Dartmoor and Exmoor can be enjoyed. For visitors who enjoy a challenge, it is rumoured that on a clear day, you can see no less than 12 church spires from here.
