Saunton Sands is a three mile stretch of flat beach in North Devon. It provides excellent surfing opportunities and is used as a base for numerous water sports. The beach is perfectly situated for long walks and being three miles in length, it is possible to find a quiet spot even on the busiest Summer’s day. The beach is backed by an expanse of sand dunes known as Braunton Burrows. They provide a safe place for children to play in and shelter for sunbathing. Braunton Burrows is one of the largest dune systems in the UK and has been designated Britain’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. 400 species of wild flowers bloom among the dunes and it provides a natural habitat for no less than 33 species of butterflies. At the Northern end of Braunton Burrows is the Saunton Sands golf course. A championship course, it was founded in 1897 and has been voted 25th in the top 100 courses in the British Isles. To the South lies Crow Point at the estuary where Taw and Torridge meet. It provides a haven for many species of birds and seals. This area of Saunton is popular for bird watching, fishing and walking.
