Nestling in the beautiful countryside of the Peak District at the junction of the A6 and B6012 between Bakewell and Matlock is the village of Rowsley. This village is split by the River Derwent and historically was in fact two villages, Great Rowsley on the west bank and Little Rowsley in the east and the two were amalgamated into one village in 1987. The original settlement was formed where the two rivers meet and with the coming of the railways in the 19th century a new part of the village grew around the former railway station leading to Great and Little Rowsley. For those who are visiting the Peak District Rowsley is well placed to be used as a base, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House are close by but one of the reasons for visiting will be to take a tour around Caudwell’s Mill originally built in 1874, it was the local flour mill and in operation until the late1970’s. Today with its picturesque location adjacent to the river the mill is once again working and provides a unique attraction for the area. Close by is the Peacock Hotel which dates back to 1652 and was at one time the dower house of Haddon Hall – a dower house being a large house on an estate which was occupied by the widow of the late owner. For whatever reason you find yourself in Rowsley take some time out to explore and appreciate this village, it has plenty to offer both the visitor and resident.
