Wirksworth is a small market town in Derbyshire that can trace is history back to before the Domesday Book and having been granted a charter to hold regular markets in 1306 still does so today. Once an important lead mining centre the town of Wirksworth grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries and when the demand for lead subsided the area became famed for its limestone and with the arrival of the railways in the 19th century found a ready and accessible market throughout the UK. As well as wealth this heavy industry was detrimental to the town as dirt and filth form this heavy industrialisation formed over the buildings only to be stopped by the intervention of the Civic Trust. The 1970’s saw an end to this and he town centre was declared a restoration zone. The benefits are there today for all to see, the narrow alleys leading up the hillside and tiny courtyards, the maze of side streets creating a visitors haven, full of history and today, thanks to the intervention of the Civic Trust, a neat and inviting location for the casual tourist. Many people visit here just to see the 13th century church, others to visit Babington House, former home to Anthony Babington who it is said was executed for trying to help Mary Queen of Scots escape from prison. Having said that no matter what your reason for visiting Wirksworth is there ne thing for certain – you will not fail to be charmed by this town.
