Located in North Warwickshire and close to the border of Staffordshire and Leicestershire is the town of Atherstone with Watling Street running through the centre of the town. It can trace its history back to Roman times and nearby to the town is the old Roman settlement of MANDVESSEDVM at Mancetter near Atherstone and lay just to the south east of the crossing of the River Anker. Atherstone was a Saxon settlement, referred to in the Domesday Book as Aderstone and just before the Norman Conquest large tracts of land were given to Countess Godiva. It is from around the 12th century that the church of St Marys is dated and it is to be found just off the Market Square in the town with its Georgian houses overlooking the square. Today the village of Atherstone has all the local amenities that are necessary for day to day living with the added benefit of a superbly picturesque location, the architecture in the village centre offers a glimpse through history whilst a stroll along the Coventry Canal locks with the occasional stop off at one of the local hostelries can prove most rewarding.
