Wellesbourne is a large village (its population estimated at about 6500) about five miles east of Stratford-upon-Avon and the same distance from junction 15 of the M40. The River Dene runs through the settlement, which in fact until 1947 used to be two distinct villages Wellesbourne Mountford and Wellesbourne Hastings, and indeed there are still two effective village centres here. The Hastings part was the larger, granted a market and fair charter by Edward I before its population and importance declined. The most significant moment historically for the village was the creation there in 1872 of the first agricultural trade union. There are three landmarks of note in and around the village – in fact these days more of a commuter town serving Stratford and Warwick among others – its Watermill, not currently open to the public, its WWII RAF base now a small civil aerodrome, and the National Trust managed Charlecote Park with its roots in the Norman era but altered and improved over the centuries. A local legend has it that Shakespeare once poached deer from its park, though there is a dispute as to whether a deer herd existed here in his time – they certainly is now, visitors likely to see the fallow deer roaming wild. The gardens of Charlecote Park which include woodland and more formal elements are extensive and lovely, with some views across the River Avon
