Appleby’s full name is Appleby-in-Westmorland, the old county incorporated in the town’s name in 1974 to recognize and preserve it – Appleby was the county town of Westmorland, which held its assize courts there, though Kendal housed the county council. The town sits on the A66 cross-country route, roughly halfway between Penrith and Brough, and was an important location in medieval times, an easily defended area in a loop of the River Eden, its Norman castle dominating the district. Although it still enjoys good communications – it is only a ten or 15 minute drive from junctions 38 or 40 of the M6, and is on the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway – it still seems very out of the way, which will please the discerning sort of traveller There is good walking very close to the town, particularly along the river, and it is also an excellent base for exploring the Lakes to the west, or the Yorkshire Dales just a few miles to the southeast. It is also a good stopping place for the various walking routes that pass through or near it – the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast Walk, and the Westmorland Way. Sadly the Castle is currently closed, but it is still an imposing sight. More approachable architecture, in both senses, is to be seen on Boroughgate, the broad street linking the Castle to the south with the cloisters designed by Sir Robert Smirke and the 16th century Moot Hall to the north. Also to be seen during a visit are the almshouses – the Hospital of St Anne established by Lady Anne Clifford near the castle entrance, and the crosses at either end of Boroughgate, the so-called High Cross outside the entrance to Appleby Castle bearing the inscription: “Retain your loyalty preserve your rights”. Those interested in English political history will perhaps already know that Appleby was Pitt the Younger’s constituency when he became Prime Minister in 1783. Appleby with its population of around 2,500 may be a backwater for most of the year, but every June for the week running up to the second Wednesday that month it is the centre of its own world event, the Appleby Horse Fair. This gathering was established by charter in 1685, and still today attracts Gypsy horse traders from all over, their animals to be seen round the town, in the shallows of the Eden, and for sale on a spit and a handshake.
