Dubwath is a small settlement between Cockermouth and Keswick, located on the north west shore of Bassenthwaite Lake. The village has the expanse of Thornthwaite Forest and Sale Fell to the south, and over the water lies Skiddaw and its forest. Although there is no general public access to sailing on the waters of Bassenthwaite Lake, the facilities of Bassenthwaite Sailing Club in Dubwath are available for a small fee to RYA members and affiliates. No motor boats are allowed on the lake except for rescue purposes, a fact that helps the tranquillity of the place. Tranquillity has been one of the factors that have lured the ospreys back to Bassenthwaite, after an absence of 150 years from this country, and they can be seen circling and diving for fish here. Birders will be pleased at RSPB work in farmland around Dubwath, where 30 hectares of wetland are being restored and recreated to provide suitable habitat for birds like snipe, curlew and lapwing that have been in decline in the Lakes. Fishermen will enjoy the area’s peace too, and can vie with the ospreys for the pike and perch for which this corner of the lakes is renowned.
