Milnthorpe is an attractive Market Town positioned on the southern most edge of the Lake District National Park in the county of Cumbria, and is home to just over two thousand people. It has an interesting history which dates back many centuries. During Medieval times it was an important market town, this tradition still continues today with a weekly market held in the pretty Market Square where there is also a good range of shops to be found. A stroll around the leafy narrow lanes will uncover mellow limestone cottages, and houses which have stood the test of time, and a 19th Century church which is dedicated to St Thomas which has impressive brightly coloured stained glass windows. Gunpowder and explosives once played their part in the town's growth with the nearby port on the Bela River, together with comb making, although comb making still continues, today sees tourists and holidaymakers enjoying the stunning scenery all around. There are pubs, and an ancient Coaching Inn which offer a warm welcome, restaurants with tempting menus, and a pleasing choice of places to stay for those who wish to linger in this unspoilt market town near the borders of Lancashire.
