Silloth (sometimes called Silloth-on-Solway) stands at the north west corner of Cumbria, looking across the Solway Firth to Galloway. For most of its history Silloth was just a small village, taking its name from the sea ‘lathes’ (barns) built by the monks of nearby Holme Cultran Abbey to store their wool. The Silloth seen today though is the creation of the Victorians. The town developed in the mid-19th century in two ways: as a port, and as a seaside resort. The development was planned with some sensitivity, the town benefiting from a large area of park known as The Green built between the sea-front and the main area of building. As a resort the town was and is famed for its relatively mild climate, sheltered as it is by the mountains of Cumbria behind it and the Galloway hills beyond, and warmed by the waters of the Solway Firth. It once boasted a pier and in the early days had many bathing engines. The clean air was supposed to have health-giving properties, an idea that saw the building of a nursing home to help the poor afflicted by fever and sickness recuperate in a healthy atmosphere. The railway came to Silloth in 1856 to serve the port there. The port still operates, largely handling grain, but sadly the railway closed in 1964. Visitors today will enjoy the links to the town’s Victorian past. Some of the fine houses built by the wealthy of Carlisle are now hotels. The excellent golf course was built in 1892, and is particularly associated with the greatest name in the British women’s game of the early 20th century, Cecilia Leitch. And above all the wonderful sunsets and sunrises have not of course changed since Turner came to Silloth to paint them.
