Once a thriving little centre of industry, Spark Bridge these days is a quiet village of traditional whitewashed Cumbrian cottages many of which date from the 17th century. It was the village’s location by the River Crake that helped it boom in the Industrial Revolution. The fast-flowing waters of the Crake, which drains nearby Coniston Water and Beacon tarn, powered the lathes of the bobbin mills that had a ready market in Lancashire. Spark Bridge itself was part of Lancashire until reorganization in the 1970s. Today the Crake is a good salmon, trout and sea trout river, offering good fishing away from the crowds of more fashionable areas. The successful can boast of their prowess in the comfortable Royal Oak, the traditional local pub that dates like much of the rest of the village from the 17th century, its traditional furniture and open fire harking back to those days. Spark Bridge is a good base for exploring the southern Lakes – Coniston and Windermere are just short drives away - or sitting as it does between the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas for visiting those areas, less well-known but full of history and areas of great beauty.
