The settlement of Watermillock sits on the western shore of Ullswater, easy to get to by road – the A592 runs through the village which is just a few minutes drive from junction 40 of the M6 at Penrith – and easy to get away from on foot, with the gentler farming country in which it lies giving way to more demanding hills behind it. Being on the uppermost of the three reaches that comprise Ullswater, there are lovely views of the lake to be enjoyed, and some messing about in boats for those with a mind to do so. If you prefer someone else to steer, there are steamers from nearby Pooley Bridge that chug down the eight mile lake to Patterdale at the southern end. In the village there is a quaint old coaching inn where walkers can recover, the white-washed Brackenrigg Inn, and for more spiritual repose there is the local church, All Saints. Although largely Victorian, with some pretty stained glass from that era, there are earlier elements incorporated in it – the tower, and a triple-locked parish chest from 1560. There is more demanding walking on the eastern side of Ullswater if you wish, or the views of those imposing fells can be taken in without leaving Watermillock. Nearby attractions include Dunmallard Hill Fort a mile-or-so’s stroll north east, and in the opposite direction the famous Aira Force waterfall in its landscaped Victorian setting, the bridge crossing over the 70 foot drop of the fall perfect for photographers.
