At the north east corner of the Cartmel peninsula the village of Witherslack is easily reachable by car, sitting just a few miles along the A590 from junction 36 of the M6, with the genteel resort of Grange-over-Sands a further five minute drive south west. But the tiny settlement is also conveniently out of the way, a feeling enhanced by its wooded surroundings and the hills behind it. Once part of Lancashire but in 1974 incorporated in Cumbria, Witherslack provides a good base for exploring the Southern Lakes – it is on the quiet back-roads that lead to Windermere via Cartmel Fell and Bowland Bridge, a route that in high-season may be very attractive for travellers. The village is just below Whitbarrow and Striding Edge, and walkers will enjoy beautiful views of the hills to the north, and Morecambe Bay to the south. Close to the village there is Whitbarrow Scar National Nature Reserve, an area of limestone pavement that is a haven for birds, but is perhaps better renowned for its butterflies: the Dark-Green Fratillary, the High Brown, the Pearl-Bordered and the Northern Brown Argus among others. Nearby Foulshaw Moss, 350 hectares of bog that is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is also known for its insect-life, including the rare emperor dragonfly.
