The village of Bowburn in County Durham is easily accessed via junction 61 of the A1(M), and is on the southern route into the lovely city of Durham from that major road. Like many surrounding communities in what centuries ago was a mainly agricultural region, Bowburn thrived for a time as a coal-mining centre, its colliery providing employment for many residents between 1906 and 1967 when it closed. Locally the settlement was immediately associated in people’s minds with its extraordinary 1960s/1970s church of Christ the King, generally likened to a rocket (its detached spire) beside a pineapple (the main building complete with orange roof). Eyesore or icon it was demolished in 2007 and replaced in 2008. The village is now largely a dormitory settlement for nearby Durham, though thanks to its position minutes from a major trunk-route Gateshead and Newcastle are also in easy commuting distance. Of late mixed housing developments have been improving the local housing stock, with parallel regeneration projects like a new park. The botanic garden near neighbouring Shincliffe is only a mile or two away north, and Rosa Shafto nature reserve only slightly further along the A688 to the west.
