Piercebridge is a small village in northern England, situated in County Durham near Darlington, on the banks of the river Tees. During the Roman invasion in AD 260-270 on their march north building roads, towns and bridges, the Romans had to cross the Tees at this point so a bridge was built followed by a fort to defend the bridge and a settlement grew, becoming Piercebridge The Roman road Dere Street runs through Piercebridge from north to south, through a field known as the Tofts, east of the Piercebridge fort. A minor road runs west, connecting the east gateway of the fort and stone foundations of many rectangular buildings with narrow ends fronting onto these streets were visible. A Roman milestone reported to have been found north of the village. A statue and two altar stones in the village are dedicated to the god Jupiter and another dedicated to the god Mars Some controversy surrounds the Roman history of Piercebridge with speculation that the bridge built by the Romans was a second bridge whilst others speculate that one may have been a dam rather than a second bridge. Research continues into the history of the area. The remains of the Roman fort are open to the public and the remains of the old Roman bridge stand around one hundred yards south of the current river course.
