St.John’s Chapel is a small village in County Durham, situated in Weardale on the south side of the river Wear on the A689 road between Ireshopeburn and Daddry Shield. It has a population of around 450 of which only a few are children. Due to that disparity, the village has become marginal in terms of its threshold for service provision, with schools, swimming pools and libraries some distance away. Originally a medieval hunting stop for the North Pennines, St.John’s Chapel grew as a centre for lead mining after 1600. The area was heavily dependent upon agricultural employment, which has been in decline in recent years creating a pocket of rural poverty. The population enjoys a high quality of life with low pollution and crime rates but numbers have largely stagnated over the past thirty or so years due to its younger inhabitats moving away inevitably due to lack of employment opportunities, causing rural depopulation. The Weardale Town Hall, built in 1865, is situated in St John’s Chapel, serving approximately 1500 residents from the surrounding seven villages and two hamlets of Upper Weardale. In 1951 the hall was gutted by fire leaving only the shell standing but after a massive fundraising campaign, it was rebuilt in 1952. Today it is still run by a Management Committee representing the residents, is sustained by lettings and events and is available for use by the whole of the Dale.
