Altrincham is to be found to the south west of Manchester, about eight miles away and today many of its 40,000 residents whilst working in Manchester appreciate the proximity of their market town to Manchester. Altrincham can trace its history back to Saxon times but it wasn’t until around 1290 that Altrincham was awarded its charter as a borough. As a market own in this period it grew in importance, there is a story that the lord of the manor diverted the Roman road from around the town towards its centre so as to increase the local trade at Old Market Place! It was the 18th century though that saw Altrincham grow into the town it is today, the arrival of the Bridgewater Canal, the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway all made great contributions to the towns growth. In 1974 the town became part of Trafford Metropolitan Borough having been until then a part of Cheshire, today the town still regards itself as Cheshire as this is its postal address. In the town today there are numerous shops, both local and national chain stores providing an excellent range of products for the resident and visitor. Yet the town is convenient for a short trip to the rolling Cheshire countryside which nestles alongside its outskirts. With country homes that are open to the public, golf courses and other recreational facilities nearby Altrincham has adapted to satisfy the most demanding of residents or visitors.
