Though sometimes described as a hamlet Cotebrook really qualifies as a village, possessing both the 1875 Chapel of St John and the disused Primitive Methodist chapel built three decades earlier, both of them pleasantly dignified for 19th century religious buildings. The settlement spreads out along the spider’s web of roads and lanes that cross the rolling Cheshire farmland here, linking it to Chester 12 miles away westwards, Winsford to the east, and Tarporley just five minutes’ drive south west along the A49. There is an eclectic mix of modern houses, converted barns and older cottages and farmhouses, some of the latter at the centre of sizeable farms. Tarporley has good shopping facilities in its Georgian High Street, but Cotebrook itself boasts two good pubs, and even a coffee shop, an indication this is prosperous commuter country: Manchester is just 35 miles east, its airport nine closer than that. To emphasise that prosperity Cheshire Polo Club is in the next village, and there are two 18-hole golf courses a short drive away. As well as the public footpaths through the countryside, dotted with small bodies of water like Oak Mere to the north and Oulton Mill Lake to the east, and stands of old trees, the village has a country park of some 50 acres around the long-established Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre, a significant local attraction.
