Haverhill is an historic Market town that dates back to pre-Roman times and is home to just over 22,000 people. The town was famed for it’s Textile Industry in the 19th Century and was a major player with the production of smocks for agricultural workers. There is a wealth of Victorian architecture to be admired and a terrific Arts Centre where Live Music, Theatre and Dance are regularly performed and enjoyed, there are a myriad of shops to choose from, or perhaps a visit to a 13th Century Castle is more for you, Clare Castle ruins are set on a 70’ high Motte, the inner Bailey was home to a railway which has intriguing exhibits to share, the castle is set within a beautiful park, where the footpath will lead you on a journey of discovery along the banks of the River Stour. Or how about the wonders on offer at Linton Zoo, with exotic animals from Giant Tortoises, and Toucans, or why not get nose to nose with Tigers, all is possible with the viewing windows…. Perhaps the thought of the elegant era of Steam Travel will tempt you to visit Colne Valley Railway, where Steam Locomotives journey through countryside that pleases the eye, the station offers a picnic area and Buffet Carriage, and is definately one encounter that should not be brief.
