Houghton is a very pretty village in Cambridgeshire with the River Ouse running by, the Lock is a magnet for painters and photographers as the countryside around it waits to be captured. The Village ‘Green’ has a thatched clock tower with a seat in which to rest a spell. The church of St Mary’s stands on an earlier Saxon site and dates back to the 13th Century. The beautiful and enchanting Houghton Water Mill is still working and the chance to buy flour in the shop is one worth taking, the evocative river reflects the 17th Century Mill beautifully. Hemingford Grey Manor is close by and dates back to 1130, the gardens are open and show colourful wonders, the house rewinds time but tells it’s story faithfully. Perhaps a visit to the Norris Museum will explain the mysteries of bones from giant reptiles, and secrets from the Stone Age. Or how about the Cromwell Museum which housed in his former school, has interesting exhibits of portraits and documents. For the great outdoors there is Hinchingbrooke Country Park that covers 170 acres with meadows, woodlands and lakes, and is peppered with Owls, Nightingales, Butterflies and fabulous wild flowers in the spring.
