This village in the Chew Valley on the northern edges of the Mendip Hills is thought to have derived its name from the Knights of the Templar. The word cloud is possibly derived from the personal name, Cloda. The village straddles the busy A37 which connects the cathedral city of Wells with Bristol. It is five miles from the town of Midsomer Norton and within easy reach of Bath, which lies to Temple Cloud's east along the A39. The village was once surrounded by the pits of the Somerset coal field, now long since abandoned. To the west of the village lies Chew Valley Lake, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a popular destination for walkers and bird watchers. The village is served by the Temple Inn and the Ring O Bells public houses. The local church of St. Barnabas's is a 1920s building in Romanesque style. Visitors seeking more inspiring architecture than the rather plain church building will find plenty to excite them in Temple Cloud. The imposing Victorian Court House, built in 1857, stands out with its Neo-Jacobean style. The village is studded with other fine buildings, most of them pre-dating the Court House by hundreds of years.
