Born 1774. Died 1843 - English poet and writer.

Studied at Balliol College, Oxford. Published a volume of Poems (1795) and an epic poem Joan of Arc (1795). Studied law and settled in Keswick. Became Poet Laureate in1813. Well known short poems include Holly Tree and After Blenheim. Wrote biographies of Nelson, Wesley and Bunyan. The Doctor (1934-37) includes the nursery classic The Three Bears.
