The town of Yate lies at the south west extremity of the Cotswold Hills. Its origins date back to AD 770 with the existence of a religious house in the area and the town is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086. The earliest evidence of human life in the area comes in the form of a Neolithic burial chamber. Those interested in the rich history of Yate can learn more by visiting the Yate Heritage Centre. As well as exhibits including historical objects, the centre hosts lectures and workshops. The area has three main minerals associated with it's history, coal to the west, limestone to the east and celestine or spar in the centre. The introduction of a railway station in 1844 really established the town of Yate, with a commuter boom in the 1960's confirming the growth from village to new town. For those interested in fresh air, the town of Yate has a number of parks such as Kingsgate Park which features a lake. Once you have worked up a thirst, you could then visit the historic White Lion Pub. The author J K Rowling, well known for her Harry Potter stories, was born in the Chipping Sodbury hospital at Yate.
