Lying just to South east of the centre of Birmingham Acocks Green is one its oldest and most important suburbs. Originally named after the Acocks family who built a large house in the area some 500 years ago and first mentioned in the Yardley Parish Register in 1604 . Originally it was three hamlets located on the Warwick Road, Flint Green, Acocks Green and in the middle of the two Westley Brook. These other smaller hamlets were eventually swallowed up to become Acocks Green. In the mid 19th century the Birmingham to Oxford railway line opened and soon the area was becoming fashionable, equal to the likes of Edgbaston. The area enjoyed exciting new developments as churches and large houses were built around the area. By the early 20th century though Birmingham itself was growing at a rapid rate and by 1911 Acocks Green was absorbed by Birmingham. Joined to the city by the new tram network it was only a matter of time before the demand for housing started to encroach into Acocks Green. Today Acocks Green boasts a number of Grade II listed buildings, interesting and attractive open green spaces with the Millenium Green off Yardley Park and alongside the Grand Union Canal being the newest addition for the benefit of the local residents. Acocks Green has an interesting and busy shopping centre and with a number of good local amenities it is easy to understand why this is a popular location
