Today Balsall Heath in has strong connections with its multi cultural background is today renowned for being the centre for Asian Balti restaurants and sweets. Balsall Heath, somewhat surprisingly, been for much of its history mainly agricultural land only being developed in the18th and 19th centuries when, because of its somewhat rural location, it found favour with the wealthy and many of the properties that were built are still evident today. A prime example of the grandeur that this area enjoyed is the Balsall Heath Library and Baths that were erected in the late 19th century which today enjoys a Grade II* Listing denoting it as a particularly important building of more than special interest, however the building is still under threat of demolition despite its historic ties. Balsall Heath was until the middle of the 20th century an excellent place to live however by the 1950’s the reputation of the area was suffering and a downward decline in its fortunes began to appear but by the 1980’s things had once again started to change and Urban Renewal saw the area begin to improve. It has been a slow revival of this areas fortune, it is close to Birmingham University and its low rents have attracted a high population of students, property developers are now taking an interest in the area and this is further acknowledgement that the area is improving.
