The town of Henley in Arden is to be found in the county of Warwickshire surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. Originally a settlement dating back to Anglo Saxon times and the later medieval architecture is still apparent today in a number of its buildings, the High Street is around a mile long and is deemed a Conservation Area with over 150 buildings being deemed as being of Special Architectural and Historic Interest. Arguably the oldest building is Joseph Hardy House (the Heritage Centre) which archaeologists consider dates from around 1345, whilst the town also boasts two churches, the Church of St Nicholas, in part dating from Norman times and the church of St John the Baptist dating from around 1448. The history of the town is attributable to its popularity, it lay at an important juncture for trade in the 19th century between London, Stafford and Birmingham and from its desire to succeed as a town it grew along the lines of the existing high street. Today Henley in Arden is a popular tourist destination in its own rights with its picturesque variety of shops, pubs and wine bars, the town still holds regular markets on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays retaining that medieval flavour that makes this a “must see” on any visit to the area. Located in the heart of the countryside and yet with easy motorway access to the M40 and M42 it is easy to appreciate why residents and visitors enjoy this superb town.
