The area known as Sandwell lies in what is known as the Black Country in the Midlands and is made up of several towns, Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich. Each of these towns has their own separate and diverse identity, Oldbury is right in the centre of Sandwell and can trace its history back to Anglo Saxon Times and the heavy industry of yesteryear has now been replaced with retail and industrial parks with this also being home to Sandwell Council. With Rowley Regis astride the Rowley Hills famous for Rowley Rag stone which through the 20th century was used in road construction. Smethwick, in keeping with the other towns in this part of the country, made its fortune out of heavy industry and today, like Sandwell, it now boasts a new shopping centre and leisure facility. Whilst Tipton may not feature as a tourist destination its historical listed buildings are worthy of a visit and Wednesbury is undergoing a period of change from the heavy industrial area that it was in the 20th century to one more fitting of the 21st century. Which brings us to West Bromwich, the largest of the towns in the Sandwell area, having now shaken off its image as the “Chicago of the Midlands” West Bromwich boasts a modern town centre with some interesting and historical buildings.
