The market town of Biggleswade in Bedfordshire lies on the A1 between Letchworth and St Neots. The town has a population of just over 10,000, although this is rising due to new housing developments. It is situated on the River Ivel and provides easy access to London or to the North of England by road or rail. It is on the main rail link from Central London to the North (East Coast Main Line) and offers fast trains into London's Kings Cross station. Humankind has inhabited the Biggleswade region since at least 10,000BC, with arrowheads from that era having been found nearby. An important Roman loop road known as the White Way passed through Biggleswade, linking up with the Ermine Way at Godmanchester. Saxon invaders settled at Biggleswade in the 5th century AD. It is thought that the name of Biggleswade was derived from Biceil, an Anglo-Saxon personal name and Waed, the Saxon word meaning ford. Biggleswade is characterised by its buildings which have remained largely unchanged and retained their character over the years. The Market Place in the town centre holds a general market every Saturday. Surrounding the Market Place there are a number of shops, many of which are in attractive converted buildings such as the old Market house.
