Just 30 miles, and less than half an hour by train, from the centre of the capital, Luton is surrounded by spectacular countryside. The Dunstable Downs and North Chilterns form an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty popular with walkers and nature lovers. Luton is also within one hour’s drive of popular cities Oxford, Cambridge and Birmingham.
The site of an ancient stone circle proves that people first settled in the Luton over 7000 years ago and the town was thriving as a trading post by the time of its entry into the Doomsday records. The brewing and the hat trades helped the population to swell and the town’s museums and heritage trails help visitors find out more about the area’s fascinating past. Wardown Park Museum holds an internationally respected collection of hat and lace making memorabilia and a superb interactive display allowing visitors to travel through time from Luton’s earliest days to modern times. Stockwood Craft Museum explores rural life in Bedfordshire and holds the Mossman Collection of horse drawn vehicles.
For entertainment the hat Factory arts centre provides a variety of theatre, music, comedy, cinema and dance performances and workshops. Luton Library Theatre also hosts contemporary and traditional arts that reflect our multi-cultural community. Right in the centre of town the Galaxy Centre features a multi-screen cinema, bowling, bingo, nightclub and several restaurants. Our events calendar is equally varied, Europe’s largest one-day carnival, a week long St Patrick’s festival, Mela, free fireworks display, music in the parks and even a marathon all take place every year.
With over 200 pubs, bars and restaurants it’s easy to find food and drink to your taste. Cuisine ranges from traditional British fayre to high quality Indian, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Thai, French and even Polish restaurants. Pubs and bars also vary from busy and modern to quiet and traditional. Many provide live music and entertainment.
Shopping in Luton is an experience in itself. Bury Park’s ethnic food, clothing and craft stores are wonderful to explore whilst the town centre provides a mix of high street names and independent boutiques and Luton’s markets are great for bargain hunting.
