Until the mid 1950`s Ifield was a small village but was subsumed by the urban expansion of Crawley New Town (now an Urban District). It has managed to retain it`s green and there is still the atmosphere of the village about the place and some fine buildings to be seen. The first part of the name is probably derived from the Old English - iw - meaning yew. The Friends Meeting House is a cottage built in 1676 and still in use, it is thought that the stone for the walls came from nearby Slaugham Place; the roof is of Horsham stone and the building is supported by a heavy oak pillar rising from floor to ceiling. The church of St.Margaret is mainly 13th & 14th century in origin, the west tower was rebuilt in 1883 in the Norman style with a broach spire; the 12th C font is made of Sussex marble, there several monuments the best being two 14th C life size effigies thought to be Sir John and Lady Margaret de Ifelde. In the church yard is the grave of Mark Lemon who founded The Field magazine and was also the founder and first editor of Punch. To the west is the 16th C hammer pond, a remnant of the Sussex iron workings, the Mill building started life as an iron foundry with the demise of the iron industry in Sussex in the 17th C the mill was converted to a corn mill and continued working until 1927. It lay derelict until 1974 when it was brought by Crawley Council, it has now been restored and houses a small museum.
