Peacehaven sits at the top of chalk cliffs overlooking the English Channel, 6 miles (10km) east of Brighton. The town was conceived by Charles Neville as a place for those returning from the horrors of the Great War, as having "homes fit for heroes". Plots of land were made available to build your own home, and by 1924 there were just over 3000 people living in the new town. It was laid out in a grid plan a mile long and a half a mile back from the cliffs (rather like a Roman town). Originally called New Anzac-on-Sea but after the disaster at Gallipoli its name was changed to Peacehaven. At each end of the town were tall, white stone pillars to mark the eastern and western boundaries; only the western ones are still in place. Today Peacehaven is a thriving town of over 13,000, with all the facilities one would expect of a town of this size. The Greenwich Meridian passes through the town and there is a monument marking the place where the meridian leaves the cliffs and passes into the English Channel.
