East Cowton is a small North Yorkshire village situated between Northallerton and Darlington. Once with its own station on the main East Coast line the village though off the beaten track is still easy to access, just a fifteen minute drive along country lanes from Scotch Corner on the A1. All Saints Church to the west side of East Cowton is an Edwardian red brick building that replaced a much older one when it was constructed, and has elements within it from earlier times, including a round Norman font. The old vicarage is a more elegant grade II listed building from another era. East Cowton these days has just the one pub, The Beeswing Inn, named after a great racehorse of the past, but there is another just a mile or so away, the Arden Arms, near to South Cowton Castle. This fortress was built in 1470, near the end of the Wars of the Roses, as a fortified home for Sir Richard Conyers and his dependants. It has two towers four storeys high, the rest of the structure being three-storeys. Unusually the grade I listed castle – really more a fortified farmhouse - is still in private hands, and is occupied. Another building of note close by is St Mary’s Church, dating like the castle from the 15th century, and it contains alabaster likenesses of Sir Richard Conyers and his wives. Pepper Arden Hall, the stately home near the village, is of more recent construction, built in 1742 and revamped in Victorian times by a wealthy industrialist. There are pleasant walks in the country around the village, and plenty of local wildlife to look out for including hares and for those lucky enough and out late enough badgers. And for birders there are skylarks, curlews and lapwing, and in the wetlands greylag mallards and widgeon can be spotted.
