For a tiny village - its population is only 120 - Malham in the Craven district of North Yorkshire has a long list of attractions going for it. The village itself is a pretty one, stone cottages dotted along the lanes, a tiny bridge taking you over the beck, and very importantly a good pub. But it is what lies just beyond the village that brings in most visitors. A brisk walk takes you to Malham Tarn, the highest lake in England at 377m above sea-level. Pretty if not spectacular, the lake is home to a wide variety of birds feeding on it and around it, and beneath the surface there is thriving aquatic wildlife. Its greatest claim-to-fame however is that Charles Kingsley wrote the Water Babies after staying with the then owner of the estate, which is now a National Trust property. For the photographer and of course the climber the real draw is further on, Malham Cove, limestone cliffs that offer a challenge to the mountaineer, though a few metres beyond there is a way up for fit walkers taking them to the limestone pavement beloved of geography teachers since jackets with elbow patches were invented. Also in the neighbourhood is Gordale Scar, a gorge formed when a limestone cave fell in, and Janet's Foss, a lovely waterfall named for the queen of the local faerie folk. While looking at the scenery, don't forget to keep your eyes peeled around your feet - there are wild strawberries and cranberries to be found in the area at the right time of year.
