The little North Yorkshire village of Markington, roughly halfway between Ripon and Harrogate, sits a short distance to the west of the A61 road which connects those two towns. In spite of its size, the village has a choice of accommodation for the visitor, with the renowned Hob Green Hotel and Restaurant for those who want pampering, and the Yorkshire Hussar Inn Caravan Park for those who fancy fewer frills, though both may end up visiting the inn itself. Markington’s greatest claim-to-fame is the nearby Fountains Abbey, just a short distance to the north, a magnificent reminder of the power of the religious houses before Henry VIII broke them. The landscape around the village offers some reminders of the Cistercians, some of the field system dating from their time, walls still standing that were originally built by the industrious order. The Tudor Markington Hall within the village is another draw, once having been owned by the Wilberforce family. William Wilberforce, son of the eponymous great emancipator of the slaves, is said to have funded the building in 1844 of the local Anglican church, St Michael the Archangel, seeing it completed just a month before he converted to Catholicism! Markington provides a good base for exploring some of the larger settlements in the region: genteel Harrogate is a short drive away, as is Ripon with its races and cathedral, and further afield but still within easy reach is York with its myriad attractions. Alternatively and in total contrast a dawdle westwards through the back lanes and minor roads could lead to Pateley Bridge, one of the undiscovered glories of Yorkshire.
