Reeth is a lovely Swaledale market town with a population of just 750 people. Situated at the northern end of the Yorkshire Dales National Park where Arkengarthdale and Swaledale meet to the east of Calver Hill, it is easy to access, just a 15 minute drive from Scotch Corner on the A1. Originally a Saxon settlement, Reeth used to be a lead mining town, and at one time was a hand-knitting centre too. Both activities are featured in the Swaledale Folk Museum, but check about opening times if you plan a visit. For a small place Reeth is well served for hostelries, with three to choose from, including the lovely King’s Head, whitewashed and solid like so many of the 18th century cottages in the town, many dotted around the triangular village green. A pint goes down well after walking in the dales around the town, or just a stroll along the river there. Friday is market day, when the population swells, but there is plenty to do and see the rest of the week too. This is especially so during the annual Swaledale Festival, a fortnight of music and walking events. Further afield from Reeth there is Bolton Castle, just four miles south, or the larger dales centres of Richmond and Hawes.
