The little village of Sinnington sits by the A170 road between Thirsk and distant Scarborough, just a few miles to the west of Pickering. This is the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, with the wonderful scenery around it that would be expected of such a location. Sinnington is an ancient settlement, pre-Norman, as is proved by an examination of the church. All Saints, externally a late Norman building of delicate elegance, contains pieces of Saxon and Norse origin, hogsback gravestones and old crosses. Located near the village green, this is an archetypal small village church. If the soul is well catered for well in Sinnington, the stomach is looked after even better, with three inns in the place: the Fox and Hounds, once a coaching inn, the Appletree, and the Sun. Visitors are spoiled for choice for a place to enjoy some Yorkshire beer, and in line with modern demands some really good food too. Every village should have its quirk, and Sinnington has an excellent one. Sitting in the middle of the village green there is a very photogenic packhorse bridge, a single narrow arch construction of medieval simplicity, though it may have been built later than its looks would indicate. The river Seven runs through the village, but is some distance from the bridge and there is no stream or mill race for it to span, so it sits high and dry on the grass.
