The ancient seaport of Whitby is situated on the North East Coast and is perhaps one of the most beautiful and picturesque natural harbours of North Yorkshire. Whitby is divided by the River Esk and united by the horizontal swing bridge. Dominating the East Side, and perched high on the cliff top, is Whitby Abbey, founded in 657 AD, and now an English Heritage Site, with adjacent visitors centre. 199 steps lead down the cliff side to the bustling cobbled street called Church Street. The East side of Whitby has a number of ancient streets and a lively market place. Here, there are numerous gift shops and cafes, and the famous Whitby Jet shops. Whitby’s West cliff is dominated by hotels, guest houses and tourist attractions. There is an outdoor paddling pool, a news skateboarding area, pitch and putt, crazy golf and bumper boats. The large West Cliff Beach has approximately 2 miles of sand and in the summer months there are life guards in attendance. Deckchairs and windbreaks are available to hire from the slipway near the west pier. It is a lovely stretch of beach, where families can play, paddle, bathe , swim, collect shells, play ballgames, build sandcastles and fly kites, just to mention a few activities.. Donkey rides are a favourite with the children. Dogs are restricted from the 1st May to the 30th September. When using the beaches it is wise to take notice of the tide tables especially when walking along to Sandsend as the tides reach the cliffs and there is a danger of being cut off. The beach can also be accessed from the West cliff down long zigzag paths or, in the season , there is a cliff lift, first opened in 1931, which is available from the end of April to the end of September. Along Whitby harbour there are a number of pleasure craft ready to take visitors for a trip out to sea including a replica of Captain Cook’s ship The Endeavour, an old Lifeboat, a jet speedboat and a number of larger craft with facilities for drinking and dining. The Railway Station has a link with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, with regular steam trains. The town’s Pannett Park houses Whitby museum and art gallery, a picturesque floral clock and new children’s play area. In fact, Whitby has something for everyone! Courtesy of Wonderful Whitby
