Dalkeith is a large historic town in Midlothian in Scotland situated six miles south-east of Edinburgh Historically Dalkeith grew as a baronial burgh from 1401 and was awarded Royal Burgh status in 1540. Dalkeith was a well-known market town during the 17th century with the broad High Street hosting one of the largest Scottish markets. Surrounded by beautiful parkland Dalkeith is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base to explore the nearby Edinburgh attractions, there are hotels, b&b’s, guest-houses and self-catering accommodation, a variety of shops and plenty of places to eat out. From the attractive High Street the Town Gateway leads to Dalkeith House once a castle in the 1100’s before being turned into palace c1570 by the 4th Earl of Morton, Queen Victoria is said to have stayed overnight here in 1842. Other notable buildings include the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas dating from the 13th century, the Tolbooth dating from 1648, the Corn Exchange building built in 1853 and the Cousland Smiddy which is a restored 18th century blacksmith’s cottage. Dalkeith House and the Montagu Bridge stand in the picturesque Dalkeith Country Park which has a woodland adventure playground and sylvan walks. Nearby are the Roslin Glen Country Park and the 18-hole Newbattle golf course.
