South Queensferry is an ancient town in Edinburgh in Scotland; it is situated 10 miles north-west of the city-centre on the south shore of the River Forth, the town is nestled between the famous Forth Rail Bridge (opened in 1890) and the Forth Road Bridge (opened in 1964) and sits at the narrowest point of the Forth Estuary directly opposite North Queensferry in Fife. The town developed from its position as an important ferry crossing from c1071, when Queen Margaret of Scotland paid for the ferry service as part of her journey to travel from her residence in Fife to her Chapel in Edinburgh Castle, the town was consequently named after her. South Queensferry was once an important trading and fishing port, today it is a popular tourist resort with a picturesque harbour, a selection of hotels, holiday accommodation, restaurants and pubs with the ‘Hawes Inn’ featured in the novel ‘Kidnapped’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. There is a 9-hole golf course and a museum with history of the ferry and views of the bridges. There are many historical features including the oldest house ‘Black Castle’ dating back to 1626, St. Mary’s Church built 1441, 17th century Phewlands House, Laburnum House, the Tolbooth dating from c1600 and Hopetoun House, one of Scotland’s finest Georgian stately homes, home to the Earls of Hopetoun since 1699
