Whitburn is one of the principal towns in West Lothian in Scotland situated on the River Almond, 8 miles south-west of Livingston. Whitburn was originally a crossroads settlement which grew during the 19th and 20th centuries as a coal and iron mining town, it was developed as a ‘New Town’ by the legislation of 1946 and had a thriving industry with the Polkemmet Colliery until its closure in the 1980’s. Historically interesting features include the Burgh Hall built c1830, the Whitburn Academy built in 1967 and the Whitburn South Parish Church dating from 1729 with a memorial in the Kirk-yard to Elizabeth Burns, the eldest daughter of Scotland’s National bard Robert Burns. The town is a popular tourist destination and is an ideal base to explore the Edinburgh, Lothians and Falkirk attractions with excellent transport links to all. There are hotels, B&B’s and self-catering holiday accommodation, a selection of shops, pubs, cafes and an award winning restaurant. The surrounding area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts with walking and cycling tours available and fishing on the River Almond. The Polkemmet Country Park is set in beautiful woodland and has a 9-hole golf course. Nearby attractions include the Almond Valley Heritage Museum and the award winning Falkirk Wheel.
