The town of Wallington is situated in the London Borough of Sutton. It is about three miles to the west of Croydon along the A232 road. This provides easy access to the A23 and, via this, to the busy M23 and M25 motorways. Thus Wallington is ideally situated for access to Central London, Gatwick Airport and the south coast (including the popular seaside resort of Brighton). Wallington also provides good rail connections to London via West Croydon. The original village dates back at least to the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. Its name is believed to be derived from 'Waletone' meaning 'Village of the Britons' in Anglo Saxon. The original village lay a little north of the current location of the modern town centre of Wallington. The old village location is now Wallington Bridge which crosses the River Wandle. Famous residents from the past in Wallington include musician Jeff Beck and poet Mervyn Peake. Hotels in the area include the Dukes Head Hotel and the Aerodrome Classic Hotel. Attractions nearby include Morden Hall Park, which provides a tranquil retreat of parkland punctuated by the River Wandle which passes through. The park boasts an impressive Rose Garden with over 2000 roses!
