Carmichael is a historic village in South Lanarkshire in Scotland situated on the north side of Tinto Hill, 7 miles west of Biggar and 5 miles south of Lanark. The Carmichael family took their surname from the area over 700 years ago and there have been Carmichaels resident in the village ever since, the Carmichael Estate is currently owned by Richard Carmichael, the Chief of the Clan Carmichael. Surrounded by picturesque scenery, rolling hills, woods, fields and an abundance of wildlife the pretty village is a popular tourist destination ideal for walkers, cyclists, and nature-watchers with deer, foxes, badgers, squirrels, rabbits, stoats and a variety of birds in their natural habitat. There is a selection of holiday accommodation available, shops and amenities, places to eat out, a selection of golf course nearby and fishing on the Clyde. Attractions include The Carmichael Visitor Centre with an interesting wax model exhibition of Scottish history, a farm shop selling Scottish produce including Carmichael Venison and souvenirs, a licensed restaurant, play barn and a children’s adventure playground. Carmichael History walks, cycle treks and horse and pony rides operate from the Visitor centre.
