Just as Superman was The Man of Steel, Motherwell can justifiably regard itself as the town of steel. Sitting in North Lanarkshire, some 20 minute’s drive from Glasgow, the town was forged in the blast furnace of the metal industry. Ravenscraig, that iconic pillar of Scottish industrialism, was responsible for swelling the area’s economy before the post-Thatcher years saw the lights go out on the plant. Such was its capacity for production, Motherwell was nicknamed Steelopolis. How times have changed. Like many towns in the industrial heartland of Glasgow, Motherwell has had to cope with the shifting sands of the economic landscape. It is now taking tentative steps towards an economy based on the more modern footing of the service sector. And while a town’s renewal springs from tentative beginnings, Motherwell is thriving as both a commuter town for Glasgow, and a place to live in its own right. With a history that dates back to the heady days of the Roman Empire, Motherwell became a town in 1920, when the former burgh of Motherwell merged with neighbouring burgh Wishaw, and now is the fulcrum for North Lanarkshire Council. Not quite Rome, but it is responsible for looking after some 327,000 people throughout North Lanarkshire. Perhaps as an antidote to the coal fire intensity of industrialism, North Lanarkshire has a scatter-ing of country parks offering leafy, tree-lined respite from the working week. Strathclyde Country Park can be found on the outskirts of MotherwelL, off the M74; it’s expansive grass and woodland is dominated by huge, windswept lake offering many pursuits to those who look beyond dry land for their jollies. On dry land – most of the time; their ground’s long-standing draining problems notwithstanding – are Motherwell Football Club who, since 1886, have been dogged competitors in the Scottish Football League, fighting their home battles at Fir Park, weather permitting. Motherwell is very much an extension of Glasgow and is culturally similar to much of the West Of Scotland – a part of the world that has reinvented itself after surviving some testing times.
