Muirhead is a small town in North Lanarkshire in Scotland situated 4 miles north-west of Coatbridge, 7 miles north-east of Glasgow. The town developed during the 19th century as an important industrial centre with coal-mining, brick-making and whiskey distilling industries. Surrounded by countryside, Muirhead is a popular tourist destination ideal for walkers to try the 16km North Calder Heritage Trail, cyclists with the Edinburgh – Glasgow cycle route and golfers with 13 golf courses to choose from in North Lanarkshire. The town has holiday accommodation, an Inn and a pub serving bar meals, shops and amenities, fast food restaurants, a sports centre and course fishing facilities. Muirhead is the ideal base for touring the many major attractions in the area, with excellent road and rail links across Lanarkshire, Glasgow and Loch Lomond. Neighbouring attractions include in Coatbridge, The Time Capsule leisure centre and The Summerlee Heritage Park, with a visitor centre, an exhibition gallery, tearoom, gift shop, electric tram rides and the opportunity to go down a real coal-mine, in Motherwell, The M and D Strathclyde County Park with a fairground, amusements, land and water based activities and various walks. Close by is Glasgow City Centre with excellent shopping, The SECC exhibition centre, theatres, cinemas, night-clubs and a variety of places to eat out.
