Symington is a small tranquil village in upper Clydesdale in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, situated in the Borderlands 3 miles south-west of Biggar. The village was developed c1860 at a railway junction; although the railway closed in 1966 the village remains a popular tourist resort surrounded by beautiful scenery and wildlife. Symington lies close to Tinto Hill standing at 2320ft high on the northern bank of the upper reaches of the River Clyde with the Culter Hills standing to the south and south-east. The village has shops and amenities, a hotel, self-catering accommodation and places to eat nearby. Symington is ideally located for walkers, cyclists, anglers and nature-watchers. Historically interesting features include the Norman Coutler Motte; an early medieval castle mound which dates from the 11th century and the remains of the medieval Tinnis Castle built within an Iron Age fort situated on a rocky knoll overlooking the Tweed. Attractions include the New Lanark World Heritage site, a 4-star visitor attraction with water-powered mill, the Gladstone Court Museum with a recreation of a Victorian street and the Greenhill Covenanters House Museum which details the troubled times of the signing of the National Covenant. Nearby is the spectacular Falls of Clyde with wildlife reserve and visitor centre and the Clyde Valley National Nature Reserve which features gorge woodland.
