Aultbea is a village in Wester Ross in the Highlands of Scotland situated 5 miles north of Poolewe on the east shore of Loch Ewe. During both World Wars, Aultbea was used by the Home Fleet as deep-water sheltered anchorage for their ships and Arctic convoys heading for Russia were assembled here during World War II. Following the wars Aultbea was used as a naval base for refuelling ships. Surrounded by Highland wilderness, rolling mountain ranges and beautiful beaches, Aultbea, is a popular tourist destination ideal for climbing in the Torridon Mountains, walking and cycling in the Laide and Aultbea Community Woodlands with walking tours available, fishing in the scenic sea-lochs and nature-watching the local wildlife which includes wildcat, pine-marten, eagles, whales and dolphins. The village has hotels and holiday accommodation, shops and amenities, a small harbour with picturesque views over to the small Isle of Ewe, two churches, a visitor centre, a woodcraft and hardwood café with wood products and home baking for sale. Attractions include the Loch Ewe distillery, the smallest distillery in Scotland producing a single malt and offering tours and tasting and the Inverewe Garden, a woodland garden with exotic displays from Australian gum trees to Chinese rhododendrons. Resorts nearby include Gairloch with the Heritage Museum with information on the history of the area and the Marine Life Centre with boat-tours.
