Ballachulish is a village in Lochaber in the western Highlands of Scotland, at the mouth of Loch Leven, surrounded by magnificent mountains, situated 1 mile west of Glencoe and 15 miles from Fort William. Ballinchulish translated from Gaelic means village of the narrows, this settlement lies on the shore of Loch Leven where it narrows and is split into North Ballachulish and South Ballachulish and another settlement to the west closer to Glencoe. The area is a popular holiday destination for walkers, climbers, skiers, sight-seers, nature-watchers and for sea-fishing and angling. The village has various shops and amenities, a Village Hall and a Visitor Centre, with gift shop, café, Heritage Trail and exhibition. There are many pubs, inns, restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation in and around Ballinchulish. Ballachulish Bridge is a steel truss bridge built in 1975 when the ferry closed, nearby is the 9-hole golf course, and access to the West Highland Way. Further south attractions include Loch Linnhe, Kinlochliach Gardens, the 16th century Barcaldine Castle and the Scottish Sea-life Centre. Nearby Glencoe is famous as the location of the Glencoe Massacre in1692, the Glencoe Visitor Centre details the fate of the Macdonald Clan and the North Lorn Folk Museum explains about Highland life.
